Embedding

An embedding is a list of numbers that represents the meaning of a piece of text, so software can measure how similar two passages are. An embedding model converts each paragraph, email or document into hundreds or thousands of numbers; passages about similar things end up with similar numbers, even when they use different words. Embeddings are stored in a vector database and power semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation, which is how a knowledge assistant finds the right passages before it answers. Treat embeddings of client documents as confidential data: research has shown that original text can sometimes be partly reconstructed from them.

Example

In an advisory firm

A consultant at an advisory firm searches past engagement reports for "client struggling to keep good staff". A keyword search finds nothing, but an embedding-based search returns an earlier report on workforce retention and a proposal about reducing turnover, because their meaning is close. The consultant reuses the structure and approach, not the client details.
