Private AI
Private AI is an AI system set up for one organisation's exclusive use, so its prompts, documents and outputs are not processed through shared public AI tools. The model may run on the organisation's own servers or in a cloud account set up only for it, with access limited to its staff through their existing sign-in. The organisation, or a provider under contract, decides where data is stored, who can see it, how long it is kept and which documents the AI can search. Firms often choose private AI when they cannot put client information into public chat tools. The label has no fixed standard, so ask exactly where data is processed and stored.

Example
In a law firm
For example, a 20-lawyer firm wants staff to summarise briefs and search past advice, but its client engagement terms rule out putting client material into public AI tools. It sets up a private AI assistant with single sign-on, access limited by practice group and a log of every question, so partners can see who used it and for what.
